Get to Know Emily Marlin

Why did you choose HR as your field?

When I attended Bloomsburg University I was going towards a BS in Business Administration and majoring in Management. **I knew a few professionals in the field and after talking to them about their careers, and learning about the critical role they play in hiring and strategic planning of a company, I decided I wanted to focus my area of school work in Human Resources**. This led me to decide to focus my area of study to Human Resources. I was able to enter the Human Resources concentration in my program and join the Bloomsburg SHRM chapter.

What is your current job or role?

Currently I work as a Sr. Recruiter on our Talent Attraction team. I focus on hiring individuals that work to support the American Cancer Society in the events, fundraising, corporate relationships and health systems work that we do. I support our divisions in the Central Region of the country and partner with them to find the best talent for the organization.

In your current job, what gives you the greatest sense of reward and accomplishment?

In my role I feel very accomplished when my Hiring Managers work with me and partner with me to find talent. When we find a great match and I hear a few months later that they are doing well in their new position, it is a great feeling!

What is your greatest personal or professional accomplishment?

My greatest professional accomplishment is currently balancing my personal life, work, and going to school for my MS Human Resource Management at Temple University. I am enjoying all of it!

What words of wisdom would you offer to someone entering the HR field?

I would recommend that when taking on any position in the field of HR, be sure to be a resource to employees in your company and to be a strategic partner to the various departments and individuals you support.

What have you found most valuable about being a member of PSHRM?

I really enjoy the networking opportunities and learning opportunities. Also, being on the Marketing and Communications Committee has taught me a lot and I have been able to take some of the strategies we use in our committee, implement them in my work.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I enjoy adventuring in the city with my fiancé’ and our friends. I am relatively new to the city, and there is always something exciting to do. Also, taking time to be with my family and being outdoors is always a great way to relax.

If given an opportunity to do something really extraordinary or adventurous, what would it be and why?

I would really like to take a backpacking trip through Northern Canada. I was born there and we still visit and have a cabin in Northern Ontario. It is my favorite place for true vacation and I would really like to have more time to spend up there and explore. Our trips up go by way too fast.
