Keep the Conversation Going Series – 2024 Philly SHRM Symposium

By: Cherise Stewart, MS, SPHR

The Philadelphia SHRM Symposium featured a CHRO panel of top business leaders who shared their perspectives on the future trends and challenges in the workplace. The panel included Ash Hanson, EVP & CHRO at AmeriHealth Caritas; Dan Ross, SVP & CHRO at Day and Zimmermann; Andy Sholly, PHR, SHRM-CP, Chief People Officer at National Fitness Partners; and Peggy Verdi, Vice President of Human Resources and Administration at Subaru of America, Inc. The discussion was moderated by Kelly Jones, SVP & CHRO at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.

The panel highlighted several key themes, including the development of middle management, staff well-being, harnessing AI, and the importance of understanding the business you are in.

Development of Middle Management

The panel unanimously agreed that the role of middle management is more critical than ever. Middle managers act as the bridge between senior management’s strategic vision and the day to-day operations of staff and first-line supervisors. Peggy Verdi, VP of HR & Administration at Subaru of America, emphasized the importance of developing leaders, especially in guiding staff through periods of change.

Managers who possess a deep understanding of the business are better equipped to make informed decisions that drive success. Moreover, middle managers are often prime candidates for succession planning. However, it’s not just about the organization’s expectations; companies must also ensure that middle managers remain engaged by addressing issues that matter to them, such as wellness, mental health resources, and work-life balance. When managers feel supported, they are more likely to be productive, satisfied, and committed, which in turn fosters a positive and productive work environment.

Staff Well-being

Ash Hanson, EVP & CHRO at AmeriHealth Caritas, stressed the importance of HR professionals taking care of their own well-being to better serve their customers and clients. Hanson pointed out that organizations must work to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health access and resources, treating mental well-being with the same importance as physical health. Prioritizing staff well-being not only enhances employee satisfaction but also improves overall organizational performance.

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies

Andy Sholly, PHR, SHRM-CP, Chief People Officer at National Fitness Partners, discussed the need for companies to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technologies, especially in industries with high turnover rates, such as the one he has experienced at Planet Fitness.

With the U.S. workforce shrinking due to declining birth rates and slower population growth, filling open positions will become increasingly challenging. According to the CDC, fertility rates have steadily declined from 2014 to 2020, with only a slight increase from 2020 to 2021. This shrinking labor market means businesses must adapt by embracing technological advancements to stay competitive. HR professionals play a vital role in guiding organizations through this adaptation by integrating technology that supports the business’s needs.

Conclusion
As the workplace continues to evolve, organizations must focus on developing strong middle management, prioritizing staff well-being, and embracing technological advancements such as AI. Equally important is the need to destigmatize mental health issues and provide resources that treat mental well being with the same urgency as physical health care. By fostering an environment where employees feel supported both mentally and physically, businesses can build a more resilient, engaged, and productive workforce, better equipped to navigate the challenges of the future.
